Catalan composer Montserrat Torras http://www.accompositors.com/compositores-curriculum.php?idComp=179 and Argentine vocalist/composer, Sofia Rei Koutsovitis started collaborating in 2004 in a series of pieces for voice only. Montserrat’s idea was to explore textures, timbres, colors and experimental possibilities of the human voice, intrigued as she said, by the singer’s “repertoire of sounds”. The pieces use prerecorded sound samples taken from the singer herself performing pre-composed ideas from rhythm, harmony and spoken word. She also used sounds created by hitting on different parts of her body, clapping or simply stepping. In performance, Sofia sings on top of these mixes, combining rules set by Torras and her own improvisation. For this performance, Sofia will add some compositions of her own and the use of an effect pedal to explore all the sonic possibilities of her voice.

John Zorn Vocal Project: Ayelet Rose Gottlieb, Basya Schechter, Sofia Rei Koutsovitis & Malika Zarra
A group of diverse voices was put together by McArthur Fellow, composer John Zorn, to create collaborative vocal arrangements to compositions from his “Book of Angels”. With contributions from Ra’ashanim members John Madof and Shanir Blumenkrantz, vocalists Basya Schechter and Ayelet Rose Gottlieb have been reinterpreting Zorn’s music through exploration of secular and religious texts. Now joined by Sofia Rei Koutsovitis and Jewlia Eisenberg, this project is taking on a new shape as an all female, experimental vocal group. Basya’s American Jewish background meets Ayelet’s Israeli roots, Sofia’s Argentinean folkloric sound and Jewlia’s love for ladino music. Together they will sing Zorn’s music like you’ve never heard it before.
